A Cat-Lover’s Tale

If you read In Front of God and Everybody: Confessions of April Grace, you were introduced to Daisy, the Great Pyrenees. She’s a sweet dog that any family would welcome. I did not paint such a warm, fuzzy portrait of cats. Grandma’s cat, Queenie, is what I’d call a “psycho feline.” She rules the house, gets her way, is utterly spoiled and doted on by Grandma.

Lofty Goals and the Newbery Medal

One of my more lofty goals is to win a Newbery Medal. The main medal would be oh so sweet, but I’d also be just as honored to have one of my books named a Newbery Honor Book. Imagine to be forever linked with authors like Madeline L’Engle, Jerry Spinelli, Gary Schmidt, Lloyd Alexander, Beverly Cleary, Lois Lowry. Wow. I have recently made another goal to read every Newbery winner since 1922—the year the first Newbery was awarded.

Why Do I Write for Kids?

A question I’m often asked is why I write for kids and not adults. Given my life of world travel and working on so many different kinds of film and video productions, why write for kids? Why not write about those countries and the people I’ve met? I could tell some wild stories. Like the film I shot in New Guinea. New Guinea isn’t far from Australia by distance, but people in the area where we went practically live in the Stone Age.
