Spotlight on Pam Perry

Marketing your writing is a daunting task, a job that is never done. Writers must be persistent and consistent if they want to obtain and keep a continued interest in their work and their presence. Too often, many writers under-market their work and do not research current trends and marketing venues to bring attention to their work and their brands. One must work diligently and always be on top of what does and doesn’t work. Some writers may opt to do their own marketing and PR work, which is okay, while others may employ a consultant to help them.

With the various vehicles offered via social media and the Internet, it can be fairly easy to garner attention to your work. It is still amazing how many do not utilize several of these services, which are at this time free. Smart authors and writers know that publishing their work is only half the battle. What good is a great literary piece if no one knows about it?

In walks Pam Perry. If you haven’t heard the name, you should be ashamed of yourself. Okay that was a bit much, although I’m willing to bet that more people have heard of Pam Perry than not. Pam Perry is Mrs. Marketing and PR Extraordinaire. You’ll most likely find her making rounds on the Internet, radio, and television as she teaches and counsels Christian authors and entrepreneurs how to market their work properly and effectively. She is known as a marketing guru to the stars—well, to authors and entrepreneurs in the Christian sector. To many in the industry, she has been pegged as “the connector and PR coach.” Having over two decades of experience as a public relations and advertising consultant, Perry is in no way new to this game.

Pam is a PR coach and the owner of Pam Perry: Book Publicity Coach and Ministry Marketing Solutions, a company that provides branding development as well as marketing and advertising. Perry obtained her BA in Journalism and Public Relations from Wayne State University. She started her first blog in 2005 and currently has a network of tens of thousands. Perry has a large array of skills ranging from social media marketing to digital branding. She can be found on just about every social media venue possible, and she is consistent with her presence—very consistent.

Perry was voted one of the top 100 Savviest in Social Media, one of the top 25 Urban Professionals to follow on Twitter, as well as one of the top 50 Black Business Women Online. She describes today’s social media as “networking on steroids” and believes that today’s brands must be engaged in order to be successful. While listening to one of Perry’s interviews, I found it interesting that “pink” is part of her branding, which is why you will always find her wearing some form of the soft pastel color.

Ministry Marketing Solutions is a public relations and marketing firm that has gained the attention of the likes of Bishop T.D. Jakes and other ministerial authors. She is an online radio host for The Chocolate Pages Show and has interviewed celebrity authors such as Kirk Franklin and Yolanda Adams. In addition, she is an Emmy award−winning TV producer.

She has worked with public figures and entities such as Tavis Smiley, Tom Joyner, Oprah, The Today Show, Essence, and TBN, just to name a few. Mrs. Perry has an impressive LinkedIn profile and an overall a remarkable presence on the Web. She is the author of Synergy: How to Use the Power of Partnership to Market Your Book, Grow Your Business, and Brand Your Ministry.

Pam Perry has taught journalism and freelanced for the Michigan Chronicle. She is currently a columnist for Keeping Family First online magazine, with some of her work appearing in Gospel Today magazine, the Detroit Free Press, and other periodicals and publications.
